USB devices often require drivers for them to be able to be used on your computer and specific operating system. You may commonly find your printer, mouse, external hard drive, and other common devices that connect by USB that require a driver.
As you may have realized, the driver may not need to be manually installed. A significant number of drivers for common devices are pre-installed on your operating system.
As newer operating systems have been released, commonly more and more drivers are pre-installed on the operating systems for ease of use. Additionally, many updates to your operating system also involve drivers, which is a primary focus in operating systems, with regard to the increased versatility of drivers.
Class drivers and other types of device drivers also play a role. These drivers recognize similar types of devices, such as the many USB mice on the market, and make them compatible with devices and function similarly.
However, there are plenty of devices that require some searching for the correct driver. Here are the common ways to find the driver for a device:
- CD that came with the device
- Internet
- Manufacturer’s Website
The easiest way to look for the driver is to check the CD that came with the device. For instance, many mice that are connected via USB come with a CD. On the CD, you will normally find the software where you can customize the way the mouse works. Here on the CD you can normally often find the correct driver for your device. This is often the most reliable way to find the driver.
The Internet is also a great way to find the driver as well. This is not to be confused with the manufacturer’s website, however, which is next. Often when your operating system recognizes a new device, it will search on your computer to find the correct driver. If this is not successful, it may prompt you to search the Internet for the correct driver. This is an easy way to find the driver, with mixed success.
If the driver is not on the CD, and not found on your operating system or with a search on the Internet on your computer, the manufacturer’s website is a reliable way to identify the driver. Simply go to the manufacturer’s website and look for support for your device: make sure you know the model number. You will almost always find the driver you are looking for to make it compatible. If you don’t find it on the manufacturer’s website, contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
